Safety Recommendations

Safety Recommendations for Use

Inappropriate use of abrasive stones is highly dangerous. Care should be taken against potential risks during the use of abrasive stones, and necessary precautions should be studied. Only abrasive stones that are declared to be compliant with the highest safety standard EN 12413 and bear this marking should be used. Machines that are not functioning properly or have faulty/missing parts should never be operated. Employers must conduct a risk assessment on all individual abrasive operations and ensure that their employees have received adequate training to perform their duties.

Precautions Against Possible Risks

Physical Contact with Abrasive Stone

• Always exercise the utmost care and attention when using abrasive stones. Long hair should be tied back, loose clothing should not be worn, and ties or jewelry should not be worn.

• Before mounting or changing abrasive stones, the machine's power source should be turned off or the plug should be disconnected from the electrical source to prevent accidental operation.

• Machine enclosures (protective equipment) should never be removed. Make sure that machine enclosures are in good condition and properly adjusted before operating the machine.

• If the workpiece or machine is manually directed, gloves and appropriate attire should always be used. Gloves should meet a minimum protection level of category 2 according to the EN 388 standard.

• After shutting down the machine, make sure the abrasive stone has stopped before leaving the machine.

Injuries Due to Fragmentation of Abrasive Stone

• Always exercise the utmost care and attention when handling abrasive stones, as these products can easily be damaged. Before use, all abrasive stones should be inspected to ensure they are not damaged or defective.

• Abrasive stones should be stored in dry and frost-free environments with stable temperature differences. Make sure they are well protected against damage and deterioration.

• Abrasive stones with expired expiration dates marked on them should never be used. Recommended shelf lives for abrasive stones can be listed based on their binders: 3 years for resin and shellac-bonded products, 5 years for rubber-bonded products, and 10 years for ceramic-bonded products.

• The abrasive stone or its packaging should be checked for any warning information or other safety information.

• Make sure the correct abrasive stone is selected. Never use a product that has not been identified as suitable.

• Follow the instructions of the abrasive stone or machine provider for mounting abrasive stones.

• Do not exert excessive force on mounting equipment or modify mounting equipment to fit.

• The maximum operating speed specified on the abrasive stone should never be exceeded.

• Ensure the correct mounting equipment is used and that they are not deformed, clean, and not rusty.

• Use the backing pads provided by the manufacturer.

• After mounting an abrasive stone on a machine, run the abrasive stone at its own operating speed for at least 30 seconds with the machine's protective equipment in place before starting to work.

Machine enclosures (protective equipment) should never be removed. Make sure machine enclosures are in good condition and properly adjusted before operating the machine.

• Make sure the workpiece is securely and properly supported. Ensure that clamps are properly adjusted and secure.

• An abrasive stone mounted on a machine should never be operated while in contact with the workpiece.

• Do not apply excessive load or sudden pressure to the abrasive stone, and do not allow it to overheat.

• Do not use abrasive stones for areas not intended for grinding.

• To ensure the effective operation of the abrasive stone and prevent issues like clogging or uneven wear, the abrasive surface should be reworked with a dressing tool at appropriate intervals.

• Allow the abrasive stone to come to a stop on its own; do not try to stop it by applying pressure to the surface.

Noise

• Regardless of the noise level, it is recommended that ear protectors complying with EN 352 standards be used for all applications (manual or fixed workpiece or machine).

• Make sure the correct abrasive stone is selected for the task at hand. An inappropriate abrasive stone can produce excessive noise.

Vibration

• In operations where the workpiece or machine is manually used, injuries due to vibration can occur.

• If numbness, tingling, discomfort, or numbness occurs after 10 minutes of continuous operation with an abrasive stone, take a break.

• Since the vibration effect is more pronounced in cold weather conditions, keep your hands warm, perform regular exercises for fingers and hands. Work with modern equipment with low vibration levels.

• Equipment should be well maintained, and if excessive vibration occurs, the machine should be stopped and checked.

• Use high-quality abrasive stones and store them in good conditions throughout their usage life.

• Mounting equipment should be well protected, and if they are worn out, replaced with new ones.

• The workpiece or machine should not be gripped excessively tightly, and excessive pressure should not be applied to the abrasive stone.

• Avoid continuous operation with an abrasive stone.

• Choose the right product; an unsuitable abrasive stone can lead to excessive vibration.

• Do not ignore physical discomfort caused by vibration - seek medical assistance.

Disposal of Abrasive Stones

• Used or defective abrasive stones should be disposed of according to local or national regulations.

• More information can be obtained from the Product Information forms provided by the supplier.

• Remember that the abrasive stone may be contaminated with the material of the worked workpiece or due to the work process.

• Before discarding waste abrasive stones, they should be damaged. This prevents them from being reused after being removed from where they were thrown.
